Last week, Mosaic hosted its second annual Florida Hunger-Relief Forum in Bradenton. The forum brought together a host of private, public and not-for-profit agencies and organizations to discuss solutions to combat the devastating impacts of food insecurity in Florida. During the event, keynote speaker Adam Putnam, Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture, unveiled “Florida’s Roadmap to Living Healthy” program. The new web-based GIS tool is the first statewide map that correlates lack of nutritious food access with poor health indicators. It was designed to help identify high-risk communities in Florida and allow for a targeted approach to intervention and a way to measure success.

The event brought about an immersive and interactive dialogue with local, state and national policymakers who are driving advocacy and action on hunger and nutrition issues. Most importantly, the forum, which included FFA and 4-H students from Manatee, DeSoto and Hardee counties involved in the food packing event, created opportunities for attendees to learn from one another and focus collective efforts to help meet Florida’s need for food access.
